Legend / History of Sedir Island

Many places in coastal Anatolia are steeped in myths and legends associated with the name of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra.

According to ancient legends, the island of Sedir was given to Cleopatra by Mark Antony as the most beautiful place in the world. Especially for his beloved he ordered to bring here an extraordinary sand from Tunisia. Whether it is true or not, now it is no longer known. But sand of this shape is only found in one place in northern Africa. It has a unique shape and looks like small pearls formed from limestone tuff.

The island of Sedir (Kedrai Island) was part of the ancient state of Karia, then fell under the influence of Rhodes. The names “Sedir” and “Kedrai” have the same meaning and translate as “cedar”.

Once upon a time, the ancient city of Kedrai was located on the island of Sedir. High fortress walls with towers surrounded the city, and the temple of Apollo was known far beyond the region.

Now only the ruins of Kedrai remain. Lizards run along the overgrown paths, and the few antiquities enthusiasts do not prevent each other from diving into the past. The fortress walls and towers of the city, the foundations of the temple of Apollo, and the amphitheater on the eastern side of the island have survived to this day.

Is it worth visiting Sedir Island Cleopatra Beach?

Amazing beach and a place of historical “ruins” with which beautiful legends are connected. Yes, Cleopatra’s Island is worth a visit.

There is a legend that 2 thousand years ago Queen Cleopatra herself bathed here. Mark Antony gave the island to his crowned lover, but the capricious beauty did not like the sand on the beaches of this island, and then by order of the amorous emperor from Egypt was delivered special sand. The sand is unique in its structure, its grains of sand resemble small pearls. Perhaps this is just a beautiful fairy tale, but the same sand exists in only one place on Earth – in the north of Africa. You will feel satisfied enough after swimming, visiting local sights: the antique amphitheater, and the temple of Apollo.

The amazing warm, clean, gentle sea and unique snow-white sand of the beach will leave unforgettable impressions when visiting this place. Visiting the “Cleopatra’s Island”, you can combine a exciting historical tour with a beach vacation in one of the most beautiful places in the vicinity of Marmaris.
